Colorado: a Great State for Solar

Colorado: a Great State for Solar

Colorado is one of the best places in North America to take advantage of solar power. Here in Colorado, the climate and legislative environment come together to create the perfect place to pursue energy independence through solar electricity. There are plenty of reasons we love living in western Colorado: the natural beauty, the perfect climate, the recreational opportunities, and the pace of life. But as a solar provider, we love the way Colorado and solar energy work so well together.

Colorado Solar

While there is always room for growth, Colorado already has a strong solar presence. The latest numbers from the Solar Energy Industries Association show that Colorado is ranked 12th in solar production with over 200,000 homes powered by solar. That production comes from 43,950 solar installations creating 2.67% of the state’s electricity.

Those numbers are encouraging – but there we’d love to see those numbers much higher. Currently, California ranks number one in solar production with almost 800,000 installations producing 15.56% of the state’s electricity. At Mountain Power Solutions, we’re doing everything we can to catch up with those numbers!

Colorado Climate

Colorado has the perfect climate for solar power. While the state’s tourism industry likes to exaggerate a bit, we still get an impressive amount of sun every year. According to the National Weather Service, Colorado has 115 clear sky days, 130 partly cloudy days, and 120 cloudy days each year. But it doesn’t take a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing and anyone living in Colorado knows that we get a whole lot of sunshine.

You might have heard the claim that Colorado gets 300+ days of sunshine per year – that’s only true if you count a day that gets any sun a ‘day of sunshine.’ But that doesn’t change the fact that Colorado is the perfect place for solar electricity.

Solar Friendly

The weather isn’t the only thing that makes Colorado such a solar-friendly state. There is also a wide range of rebates, grants, and tax incentives for going with solar or another renewable energy source. At last count, Colorado has 91 grant programs, 21 green buildings incentives, 248 loan programs, 186 tax incentives, and 1,207 rebate programs.

Coloradan’s love of nature makes for a state that welcomes the prospect of environmentally friendly innovations. And that is reflected in Colorado’s many programs that encourage solar investment – both residentially and commercially.

Going Solar in Colorado

There are plenty of reasons to love Colorado, and the solar-friendliness of the state is just one more to add to the list. The combination of the perfect climate and a great incentive program come together to make Colorado one of the most solar-friendly states in the US.
